Germany–Ukraine Regional Partnership for Nature: Mobilising Private Finance for Peatland Restoration
Ukraine’s peatlands are valuable habitats for biodiversity and play an important role in water regulation, climate protection and climate adaptation. In areas affected by war, intact wetlands may also have strategic relevance: their waterlogged terrain can restrict movement, while their protection raises questions about land use, access and security.
Using the partnership between Chernihiv and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a practical example, the panel will discuss how conservation and restoration can respond to these different needs. Speakers from government and civil society will explore how public support and private finance, possibly with the help of MoorFutures, the VCM or Article 6, can enable long-term restoration while safeguarding biodiversity, ecological integrity and promoting climate action.
